Definitions

Type Definition Sources
Noun IP telephony is a general term for the technologies that use the IP packet-switched connections to exchange voice, fax, and other forms of information that have traditionally been carried over the dedicated circuitswitched connections of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The IETF Working Group currently has published several RFCs and Internet draft documents. IP telephony is the result of the transformation of the circuit-switched telephone network to a packet-based network that deploys voice-compression algorithms and flexible and sophisticated transmission techniques. It delivers richer services using only a fraction of traditional digital telephony's usual bandwidth. (used 83 times in citations and controls)
